The Cathedral receives no regular funding from central or local Government, or from the Diocese. It is a wholly independent financial entity, funded by our own endeavours and the generosity of visitors, friends and worshippers.
Without the commitment and generosity of our supporters, we simply could not continue the breadth of our work. This is why the gifts that people choose to leave us in their wills are so important to the survival of Chester Cathedral and they are a wonderful opportunity to help ensure that we can pass on this beautiful Cathedral with love and pride to future generations.
Funds received are used for the support of music and education, maintenance or conservation associated with the Cathedral fabric or grounds. Money gifted to us is not spent on administration.
If you wish you can choose which aspect of Cathedral life your gift will benefit.
Cathedral General Funds
It costs the Cathedral £1,000,000 per year to maintain its activity and receives no funding from the state.
The English choral tradition is the lifeblood that turns our Cathedrals from silent spaces into resounding places of glory.
The Cathedral is a place where young and old are inspired to learn. The Chester Cathedral Education Trust has been establish to ensure this activity continues.
Fabric and Grounds
The Cathedral and much of its grounds and buildings are listed requiring substantial financial support to maintain.
The Friends of Chester Cathedral (Charity No. 501740)
The Friends of Chester Cathedral is an independent charity which through its membership and legacies provides grants to help with specific projects to support and enhance the Cathedral and its grounds.
The Friends have kindly supported the production of this leaflet.
So whichever option you choose, you can be assured that your gift will be of lasting importance to us and to those who share your interest now and in the future.
Tax Relief on donations
If you leave a gift in your Will, its value will be deducted from your estate before inheritance tax is calculated and therefore is 100% exempt from tax. Your Legacy can be a fixed sum or simply part or all of your estate after other gifts have been distributed. The Cathedral will be eternally grateful for any donation no matter the value.
There are many ways to support the Cathedral from donations through to buying a gift or simply enjoying a coffee in the Refectory. We welcome your support in whatever form it takes.
The Refectory, built in the 13th century, was the dining hall for the 40 monks who belonged to the community at the time. The Refectory is open from 9:30 - 4:30 and a delicious lunch menu, fabulous cakes and free Wi-Fi!
