Education is an integral part of the work of Chester Cathedral. The Education Department at Chester Cathedral is one of the first organisations in the country to be awarded the Learning Outside the Classroom Quality Badge, recognising it as a provider of quality, safely managed educational experiences for young people. The Quality badge combines learning and safety into one easily recognisable badge for all organisations providing learning experiences outside the classroom.
The Education Department was also awarded the Sandford Award for excellence in heritage education in July 2009.
The Education Department at Chester Cathedral welcomes over 7,000 children and young people a year for interactive tours and educational activities.
We offer a variety of tours which can cover areas of the National Curriculum and locally agreed RE syllabi. A variety of workshops are also on offer, which allows the visiting children to respond in a creative way to the Cathedral building or to explore a topic/religious tradition in more depth. These can be tailor made to fit your needs and can be adapted for different ages and abilities. Please contact us to hear more about what we can offer. All educational groups, including self-guided groups, are requested to book ahead.
The Education Team also does outreach work. We are happy to visit schools and other organisations to talk about the Cathedral to aid curriculum planning, offer INSET or lead an assembly.
The Department also welcomes and tours non-school groups which includes youth groups, uniformed organisations, confirmation classes, Sunday Schools and foreign language schools.
