What's On April 2024

After an early Easter this year we move into April. We have a variety of concerts this month and the second instalment of Assemble which is April’s featured event.

Chester Cathedral is many things to many people, and we want to be a place where people gather to discuss the BIG topics. Assemble is an invitation to come and hear engaging speakers on topics that are relevant in our modern world. Our second Assemble which takes place on Tuesday 30 April, will explore Can peace exist in a world with religion? As we settle into 2024 large parts of our world continue to live through devastating armed conflicts. Religious differences instigate or fuel many of these conflicts and make us question whether peace is an achievable goal for humanity. The first two weeks of April there will be Family Activities on Tuesday and Wednesday at the back of the Nave. Come along between 11am-1pm and 2-4pm to enjoy crafts with our education team. The activities are free to take part in (donations are welcome as they help pay for the supplies).

We start the month off with the return of Queen by Candlelight taking place Wednesday 3, Thursday 4, and Friday 5 April. Experience the music of Queen featuring a cast of West End Singers accompanied by an incredible live rock band playing some of the most iconic songs including Bohemian Rhapsody and We Are The Champions.

The busy week continues with An Evening with Radiohead on Saturday 6 April. Enjoy a full live band, complete with the nationally renowned Mike Nowland String Trio, as they take you on an epic journey of Radiohead’s vast universe of music.

London Film Music Orchestra return with two sold out showings of The Best of Hans Zimmer and Film Favourites on Thursday 11 April. Attendees will get to enjoy an hour and 15 minutes jam-packed with cinema’s most iconic music, including Harry Potter, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and much more!

Saturday 13 April we are joined by London Concertante as they present their thrilling new classical music concert Music from James Bond Movies. There are two chances to experience the Bond classics performed with a live orchestra with show times at 6pm and 8pm.

The Royal Cambrian Academy of Art in Conwy will be hosting an exhibition of artwork from 23 April until 15 May. The artwork will be displayed in The Chapter House and will be open during normal Cathedral hours.

Get ready for a night of soulful music and unforgettable melodies on Friday 26 April as Tunde Baiyewu of Lighthouse Family takes the stage. Tunde will be accompanied by a full live band as he serenades the audience with all his hits. Book your tickets here.

Join Chester Philharmonic Orchestra for Postcard from Spain on Saturday 27 April. CPO will transport you to Spain with a programme of Spanish music conducted by Spaniard Jon Malaxetxebarria and featuring the young violinist Cristian Grajner De Sa. Tickets are available here.

Canon Rosie Woodall, Canon for Worship and Spirituality and Vice Dean, noted a few key services for the month.

On Thursday 25 April there will be a Choral Eucharist, in traditional language, to celebrate St Mark, Apostle and Evangelist. Most scholars now believe that the gospel according to Mark was the first to be written. He is traditionally believed to have accompanied St Peter on his missionary journeys.

Choral Evensong on Sunday 28 April will include the installation of the new Archeacon of Macclesfield, The Revd Jane Proudfoot.
